Bibi-Heybat Oil Field (Absheron peninsula, Azerbaijan) is situated on the banks of the Caspian Sea and is a major source of problems : well water poisoning, health hazards, leakage from abandoned or in operation installations entering the sea, oil contamination entering Baku Bay due to flooding.
The site is situated close to the city centre and is blocked up with superfluous amount of an oil-extracting infrastructure and other various wastes.
Environmentalists say oil pollution has already greatly harmed the ecology of the Caspian Sea. causing the decline of Caspian sturgeon on the Baku Bay, limiting their food and oxygen.
The Caspian Sea’s disputed legal status is also a risk factor for the environment and the issue got far more complicated after the break-up of the Soviet Union, with five countries vying for the sea’s resources: Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan.
